Aimless Aiming 9/10/2010
I love Thursdays.  That’s the day I get to look through my camera memory card and pick and choose from hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of photos I’ve taken over the last week that don’t fit into any particular category.  These are pictures that happened because I saw something interesting and had my camera handy to capture it – totally [...]

I Love My Job! 9/9/2010
When I left for work at the Stuart House Wednesday morning, I knew I was going to have a hard time finding a blog subject for that night.  Ted and I planned to attend the City Council meeting on Wednesday evening and then eat dinner downtown.  I would have just enough time to get off work at [...]

First Fall Storm 9/8/2010
When we went to bed Monday night I thought I would probably have to cancel Bear’s grooming appointment off-island.  The weather report was calling for a really nasty day on Tuesday, and though I didn’t much mind going to Cheboygan in nasty weather, what I did mind was getting Bear back up the hill in [...]

Labor Day Weekend – Goodbye, Summer! 9/7/2010
Wow!  Three nights without writing!  Should I even mention how many times I thought of something I wanted to tell ya’ll – or about when Ted said, “Let’s go out to eat Sunday night”, and I said – “You know I blog Sunday nights!”  To which he replied, “Remember – you’re ‘off’ this Sunday”.  It’s [...]

B is for . . . Bed & Breakfast, Blooms, Bikes, and Blogging Buddies! 9/3/2010
I had one of those rare days on Thursday - I didn’t have a blog planned!  Usually, in my mind, I have blogs half-way written three or four days in advance.  But Thursday – nothing was coming.  I know Friday is usually random picture day, but because I had been out of town on Tuesday, and because it had [...]

Charlevoix – Where Natural Beauty Meets Small Town Charm 9/2/2010
When Frankie said, “I want to take you to Charlevoix and show you the mushroom houses,” my instant comeback was, “Mushroom houses?  Is that like a toad house, only for mushrooms?”  Frankie, being the sweet lady that she is, didn’t hit me over the head with a horseshoe.  She explained that the mushroom houses were famous and, with [...]

A Ride on the Wild Side of Mackinac Island 8/31/2010
Before the traffic jam incident I wrote of yesterday, I took a wonderful two-hour bike ride around Mackinac Island.  Starting out, my only thought was to photograph anything that caught my eye, but it soon became more of an adventure into the wildness of this 8.2 mile-around rock.  The part of the island where we spend most [...]

What’s a Little Traffic Jam Among Friends 8/30/2010
Friday was a beautiful day.  I woke up with our dinner at the Yacht Club on my mind – thinking about how I would do my hair (getting longer now), what jewelry to wear – all the things that girls like to think about when we’re going somewhere special.  The day was perfect.  So perfect [...]

A Little of This, That, and the Other 8/27/2010
Hi Friends!  When I posted the blog below, it was late Thursday evening.  When I looked at it this morning, I noticed my pics don’t look as sharp as they should.  Yesterday morning, when I was outside talking with Judy and Deb, I sat my camera on top of the garbage can under our porch.  [...]

Rideable Art 8/26/2010
Sometimes I get so hung up on posting pretty pictures that I forget to talk about subjects that are of vital importance to those of us who live on the island – and those of you who are planning to visit.  It wasn’t until a reader recently suggested I write a blog on Mackinac Island bicycles [...]

The Grand Hotel readies for another tourist season from Eric Seals on Vimeo.

The opening of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is a Michigan rite of spring. The last of a dying breed - at one time, 1,200 large wood-frame resort hotels dotted the country - now there are only 12. President Dan Musser’s family has been caretakers of the hotel for three generations. With a new tourist season comes more work.
The grass is mowed, the flowers planted & the “world’s longest porch” got a fresh coat of green paint ready to be walked on by thousands of tourist feet.
The Grand Hotel had hundreds of workers from painters, maids & gardeners who spent countless hours on final preparations for their grand reopening kicking off the tourist season at their historic and popular hotel.
