Originally built in 1852, the Island House was the first summer hotel on Mackinac Island. As tourism grew, the hotel was moved in from the shore and expanded. A lot of people will mention the wide white porch while others will tell you first about the swimming pool in the center of the hotel that is enclosed within a four-story atrium. We like that this hotel is directly across from the ferry docks, and in the midst of the bustling activity of Main Street, so that when one does enjoy the view from the porch they can feel a part of it all. The Lake View Hotel captures much of the past with its Victorian-style atmosphere and nineteenth-century vernacular resort architecture, including a modified hipped roof accenting an open, wood-columned porch and a raised basement. Lake View features Goodfellow’s Italian Chop House and Goodfellow’s Wings and Things.
