📍 Mackinac Island, MI Mackinac Island is a place where centuries of Great Lakes history come together. Long before European settlement, the island was an important gathering and trading place for the Anishinaabe people, who called it Michilimackinac, meaning “The Great Turtle.” Its strategic location later made it central to the French and British fur trade and a significant military stronghold during the War of 1812. Today, the island preserves that history alongside its natural beauty. We explored the island’s stunning 8.2-mile perimeter, took a self-guided horse-drawn carriage tour through its historic landscape, and stepped inside Fort Mackinac for an in-depth look at the soldiers, conflicts, and daily life that shaped the island’s past. On Saturday we made the short drive to the Saint Ignace ferry to Mackinac, so we could spend the day on the island. The day was perfect, with sunny skies and a forecasted high of only 72 degrees! Once back on land, there are only a few ways to get around the 4 square mile island, walk, pedal, or horse. No cars are allowed on the island and e-bikes are only allowed by special permit. The taxis are horse drawn carriages and groceries come to the island in a Sysco truck on a barge, but then are unloaded and taken to their destination on a wagon by local couriers. The whole island is like stepping back in time. Many posts talk about how friendly the shops and island is for dogs, while others tell visitors to leave their dogs at home and that it’s not fair to the horses. I’m convinced that the latter are just Karen’s who don’t like dogs. Granted, our dogs are very well behaved and follow commands… mostly. They did fine with the horses and didn’t bark. It was a spectacular day on Mackinac, that was highlighted by a beautiful sunset on the return ferry. If you haven’t been to Mackinac Island, add it to your bucket list. 📍Mackinac Island Butterfly House She needed her own post. I seriously was and still am speechless of this experience and wish I could have spent my entire day here. I got to see a living papilo nephelus for the first time, the beautiful Black and White Helen that inspired my tattoo. Unfortunately she was extremely difficult to get a photo of, but there were SO MANY beautiful butterflies in this butterfly house. They even had a freshly hatched Attacus atlas, commonly known as the Atlas Moth. Opened in 1991 and Founded by local resident Doug Beardsley, the Mackinac Island Butterfly House is Michigan's first live butterfly exhibit and the third oldest in the United States. #mackinacisland #butterflyhouse #papilonephelus #blackandwhitehelenbutterfly #atlasmoth
