In 1887, the same year the Grand Hotel opened, a family named Murdick set up a small candy shop on Mackinac Island’s Main Street. 🍫🏝️ Island candy at the time meant maple sugar, a tradition going back to the Anishinaabe, often sold in little birchbark canoes, but Murdick’s Candy Kitchen added something newer to the counter: fudge. Rome Murdick is credited as the first on the island to make it on marble slabs, which gave the fudge its creamy texture and turned every batch into a show. Summer visitors crowded the windows to watch, and the habit stuck. By the 1920s, fudge shops lined downtown, and by the 1960s, the tourists had earned their own nickname, fudgies. Today there are more than a dozen shops, many still cooking in copper kettles and working the fudge by hand on marble, and the island holds a Fudge Festival every August. The Grand nine dates to 1901; the Woods nine is a horse-drawn carriage ride into the island. No cars here since 1898. Golf is all about experience, and this is one worth trying.
