Thank you to Kate Dupre, Watercolor Cafe, and Mackinac Island Community Foundation for all you are doing to support the island this year!

The Stay Home, Stay Safe mandate has affected us all in a variety of ways. Mackinac Island artist and Watercolor Cafe proprietor, Kate Dupre, captures the complexities of this uniquely challenging time through her latest series of artwork, “Shelter-In-Place.” (pictured: ”Follow the CDC Guidelines“, 8x10 mixed media on canvas panel)

“Everyone’s way of sheltering is unique and the artwork acknowledges that, empathizing with the complex issues, and celebrating the unity that this has brought about. The series addresses the topic from ironically challenging the executive order, to commending it as a security for us to hold onto,” says Kate.

This series was an attempt at expressing myself, and more details on that can be found on my Instagram and Facebook (Kate Creates). Not to minimize its intent, but the donation aspect was secondary. I typically do not create art that addresses contemporary issues like this and was amazed how the artwork stimulated people, in the Mackinac community and beyond. So I thank the Arts Council for recognizing that.❤️

What art inspired you through the COVID-19 shut-down?

Comment on Facebook

As an artist, did the shut-down give you the breathing room to create?

Great question. We are painters and have taken hundreds of reference photos during our trips to Mackinac Island. The Island always provides plenty of inspiration for paintings. For us this is a great way to focus on painting and forgot about what's happening around us for a few hours. Completed "Patio Seating" 11 x 14 Oil on Panel, last night.

I'm in the same boat as Douglas Barron! Drew this picture of some of the beautiful horses on the island and titled it "Mighty Mac Pack". Have now started an oil painting of the same picture. Like you, Douglas, I have hundreds of photos to chose from.

Beautiful Mark! Thanks for sharing! We love our horses on Mackinac Island!!

Art on beer labels.
