The 2014 Mackinac Island Lilac Festival starts on Friday, June 6, and goes through June 15. Some early lilacs are blooming, but look for the majority to blossom starting next week. In the meantime, here’s a view of some of the early summer flowers adding their color and beauty to June on Mackinac Island.

The island is about 8 miles around, and most people get around on bicycle or horse carriage. Men follow behind the carriages, walking with scoopers and bags to pick up after the horses to keep the streets clean.
I happened to arrive on the island the last day of the yearly Grand Garden Show, where many of the homes around the island display their colorfully floral gardens for the people who travel to stay at the famous Grand Hotel where the show is hosted. It was great to see beautiful old homes and their beautifully groomed gardens.

there is nothing more nostalgic to me than heading up to mackinac island. this tiny island between michigan’s upper and lower peninsula is nothing but charm...mostly because it hasn’t been updated since 1985 and no motor vehicles are allowed on the island. yup! you can only get around by horse and buggies or by bike! i mean you could also walk but ehhh 😂 and no trip up to the island would be complete without grabbing as much of their world famous fudge as i can carry! what were some of your favorite vacation spots as a kid?
