What serendipity to be celebrating a dear DC neighbor and friend’s daughter’s wedding on Mackinac Island on the SAME day as our wedding 28 years prior. We look pretty different but still in love! We were thrilled to host members of the Patron of the Arts Vatican Museums and Dr. Barbara Jatta, Director of the Vatican Museums on a unique retreat to beautiful Mackinac Island! During the retreat, guests stayed at the beautifully renovated Inn at Stonecliffe! Highlights included serene carriage rides, insightful talks, and exclusive tours of historic sites like Silver Birches and the Grand Hotel’s art gallery. #mackinacisland #innatstonecliffe #vaticanpatrons

A bucket list kind of stay in Northern Michigan Imagine waking up in a beautifully restored mansion, your room looking out at Lake Huron, surrounded by the peaceful nature of Mackinac Island… where no cars are allowed and the only way to get around is by bike or horse-drawn carriage
It honestly feels like a fairytale - but it’s real, and it’s innatstonecliffe.
This place used to be the Cudahy family’s lakeside estate, and now the main mansion has just 16 rooms, each one unique, with modern amenities and so much historic charm. In addition to the mansion, there are also family-friendly cottages and the Summer House, which offers more guest rooms - perfect for bigger groups or families traveling together. Why stay at the Inn at Stonecliffe?
Location - it’s tucked away from the busy downtown, so it feels super peaceful and quiet, but everything is still easy to get to.
Dining - whether you want a nice dinner at The Straits, pizza at The Backyard, cocktails at Horsey’s Pub, or snacks + s’mores kits from the General Store, you’ll be set.
Activities - yoga, watercolor painting, movie nights, pizza-making, lawn games... there’s plenty to do without even leaving the property.
Atmosphere - it’s SO dreamy. Every corner is beautiful. You feel like the main character in a storybook here.
Getting there from Chicago is easy too! Daily United Express flights, operated by SkyWest, from Chicago to Pellston are available all summer. From there, it’s a shuttle to the ferry, a short and scenic ferry ride over to the island, and a horse-drawn carriage to the hotel.
Consider this your sign to plan a getaway to the most charming summer destination in Michigan. Mackinac Island is calling!

Day 6 (part 1): And on the sixth day, a mass power outage quieted Mackinac (and caused a brief widespread morning coffee panic) but the weather more than made up for it. Rose early enough to catch the sunrise at Windermere Point, and spent the day chasing the cruise ships around the island. / Windermere Point morning with stunning views from the rafters of hoteliroquoisonthebeach / After our ride around the island (a breezy 8 miles) we made the trek high into the island's center to take in the breathtaking renovations at innatstonecliffe / my first time back at the Sunset Rock overlook since 1993! / Cindy & me at Stonecliffe / At Stonecliffe we managed to rendezvous with friend & landscape painter Maeve Croghan after her painting class. Love Maeve's art and admire her seamless Mackinac / SF split year life! / Took a spinoff ride out to Arch Rock on Crooked Tree road with Maeve to catch up, check out the new nature center, & snap a few more pics. To Be Continued... #innatstonecliffe #archrockmackinacisland #summer

Day 6 of the Great Lakes road trip.
We are staying at Mackinac Island for 2 nights to be able to enjoy Lake Huron before we move on.
It was pouring with rain in the morning but then it cleared enough for us to hike 17km (10.5 mile) around the island. We were the only ones on foot, other people here prefer bicycles. The Lakeshore Drive is mostly closed to the horse-traffic due to land erosion as the road lies literally a couple of feet from the water. As hikers, we found it perfectly safe and peaceful and beautiful to explore on foot.
There were lots of information boards about the island. It was considered to be the center of the Great Lakes by the indigenous peoples and it was their traditional burial ground before the colonization. In the winter, the lake gets solidly frozen and the islanders enjoy freedom of getting to the mainland independently (on foot, ski or snowmobile), without the ferries.
Overall, the island feels like one huge luxury resort with lots of customers who feel very relaxed and safe and above the reality of this year.
The water here looks milky and dreamy on an overcast day like today. Let’s hope we get to see its colors in the sunlight on our way out tomorrow.
