Grand Hotel is situated on the southwestern bluff of Mackinac Island overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and – in the distance – the Mackinac Bridge. From the front porch – the world’s largest at 660 feet – guests can look down at the well-kept gardens and relax and enjoy the ambiance of “somewhere in time”. It is no wonder that hollywood has chosen to come here more than once. Indeed, like a classic movie, Grand Hotel is larger that life.

After a delayed start to the season due to a lengthy permanent residency process, we’re thrilled to welcome back one of the most beloved faces at Grand Hotel: Neil Cargill, Manager of Woods! This week marks Neil’s 36th season on Mackinac Island, leading the team at Woods Restaurant, and we know many guests have been eagerly awaiting his return. We are honored to have such a strong team at Woods and send them a huge thank-you for their incredible work this season, and a special thank you to Tecora Whittingham, who stepped into a leadership role with grace and strength while Neil was awaiting his return. Over the next few days, we are honored to welcome thousands of guests and visitors to Mackinac Island as they choose to celebrate Independence Day with us. With that, we invite you to experience our newly reimagined Parlor at Grand Hotel. Since 1887, the Parlor has been the heart and soul of Grand Hotel, a place where guests gather to share stories, enjoy live music, and prepare for unforgettable adventures on Mackinac Island. In 1976, Grand Hotel partnered with Dorothy Draper & Company and Carleton Varney to transform the space with signature touches like the red geranium, Grand Hotel green, and vibrant furnishings spanning the decades. Now, the Parlor has been refreshed once again. The iconic dark green has been replaced with a new coral hue, Huron Sunrise, evoking the brilliant skies over the Straits of Mackinac. A new mural graces the Afternoon Tea area, complementing the Victorian scenes on the east and west walls. The carpet has also been completely updated throughout the entire Parlor level, including Peacock Alley, the Art Gallery, guest room hallway, and the Main Dining Room. Look closely and you might spot a single Grand Hotel “G” hidden in the new pattern of vines and red-and-green geraniums. We also invite you to return this fall for Dorothy Draper Design Weekend, September 26–28, 2025. Join us in celebrating 100 years of iconic American interior design with special events, including “Draper 101: Tea and History,” exclusive insider sessions, Afternoon Tea in The Parlor, and a grand 100th Anniversary Celebration Reception. Though some might not recognize the long railing that once lined the Front Porch, it was replaced in the 1930’s by the red geraniums we know and love today. Blending timeless charm with a renewed vibrancy. The space now features pastel yellow walls, fresh new window coverings highlighting tulips found on Mackinac Island, newly reupholstered chairs that retain their classic green hue, enhanced with delicate tulip motifs. The carpet has also been updated, featuring elegant floral arrangements of tulips both at the entrance and bursting across the entire floor of the Pontiac Room. Guests and visitors can look forward to experiencing celebration as they savor a daily highlight in Grand Hotel’s Main Dining Room during breakfast, Grand Luncheon Experience, and our elegant five-course dinner. #GrandHotelMichigan #AmericasSummerPlace #DorothyDraper #MackinacIsland
