In the nine decades that the Bayview Mackinac Race has been sailed, much has happened. Wars, economic depressions, and other significant events have transpired, yet the Race has gone on. In fact, President Franklin D. Roosevelt wired a message to Bayview during World War II when word reached the White House that the Club was considering canceling the race. That message read: “Sail your race.” Even then, it was clear that this race was and is important for sailors and for the State of Michigan. Bayview did sail the Mackinac Race that year, and has done so every single year since the first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925, making it the longest consecutively run freshwater race in the world. This year’s race starts on July 22, 2017.

In its own way, the Bayview Mackinac race has become a vital part of Great Lakes history, Michigan history, and sailing history.

Celebrate the start of the race in Port Huron. Then follow the course of the Port Huron to Mackinac Race as they head north along the shores of Michigan’s eastern coast. Join the festivities at the finish line on Mackinac Island. Where the hospitality and celebration is always second to none.

Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race

2017-07-30

From the 2017 Race Chair,

The 2017 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race is now in the history books and what history it has made! Il Mostro broke his own elapsed time record set in 2015 of 23:39:54 with a new time record in 2017 of 21:45:12. The entire fleet had finished the race by mid-morning on Monday which made this one of the fastest races I can remember in recent history. The weather cleared for the Tuesday Island Awards Party, the Endless Summer Band played to a record crowd, and a good time was had by all who attended.

Sailors – thank you for your participation in this event! We try to provide an excellent race and quality festivities for you and we always try to improve from year to year. Preparations for the 2018 BBBMR are already in process and we are asking a favor of you, particularly those boats with well calibrated instruments and who have data logs from the race. Would you send them to us please, or send them to Jim Teeters @ jim@tytech.org. Your data will be analyzed to provide race insights and handicap improvements for future races. A non-disclosure statement can be provided to you upon your request if you desire. In addition, Technical Chair, Art LeVasseur, 2018 Race Chairman, Dr. Gary Shoemaker, and I are having a debrief with Bjorn Johnson and Jim Teeters in a few weeks to see what was good and what needs improvement in 2018. We’ll also schedule a debrief with our various committee chairs to get their feedback and ideas for improvement in the near future.

Once again, thank you for your support for the 2017 Race and I hope the rest of your summer brings you fair winds and good sailing. Be well, be safe, sail fast, have fun!

In my long association with this race I truly believe Tricia is one of the best race chairs to run the Mac. Thank you for your dedication and service.

Great job Tricia. Thank you for running one of my most memorable adventures ever.

Tricia, you did a great job of managing change as well as preserving traditions. Thank YOU.
