4. The Race to Mackinac started with beautiful sunny skies, but near the end of the starts a storm broke out like no other. The rain was big, cold and fierce. The rain was so thick you swear it was snowing. Waterproof gear got tested.

You’re a bad ass sailor if you go from the podium straight to taking the rookie plunge. #cycrtm #kinship

And they're off! Pretty cool to watch the Race to Mackinac kick-off from #AshoreThing at the east end of Navy Pier.
The bonus was getting on top of the East End Ballroom to shoot it // #cycrtm #Chitecture

If you don’t have pictures to show how wild it was, that’s the sure sign of how wild it really was.
The Chicago Mac race (racetomackinac) is always a special one for me – and this year’s was no different and hands down one of the most intense offshore races I’ve ever had the good fortune to be a part of.
While the days of “Chewbacca”, my usual racing program I’ve done a handful of Macs with have come to an end, this year afforded me the opportunity to join up with some of our Bayfield competitors “MC^2”.
Saturday brought us gorgeous weather and excellent breezy downwind conditions right off the starting line… right up until wrapping our spinnaker in a clusterfuck of the highest order about an hour into the race, slowing us down to 6kts for ~3 miles (Wild event without pictures #1) which we eventually were able to recover from and prepared ourselves for the 40+kts squall line, driving rain that soaked to the core, and massive lightning that stretched across the lake for hours on end. (Wild event without pictures #2)
As Sunday cleared, we fought to climb back positions along the Michigan shore along the rhumbline primarily under spinnaker. As we entered the Manitou Islands, the predicted Northwest breeze built from 10 knots to nearly 30kts pounding through the swell inside Gray’s Reef. As we turned the buoy corner towards the Mackinac Bridge, we were able to set the spinnaker again, surfing down 6’ waves and hitting a top boat speed of 18.5kts in the most stunning sunset I think I may ever have experienced – as I got SMOKED by Lake Michigan gallons at a time setting the spin gear and securing the jib to the boat (Wild event without pictures #3)
All in all, we powered through an exceptionally challenging race and couldn’t have been happier to make to the island with a great group (and sharing in the joy of a father-son duo both reaching Old Goat Status on the same race no less!)

The Zoo-de-Mackinac is a weekend of huge parties with great bands, one of the most scenic bicycle rides in the country, a lot of sunshine, views of the mighty Mackinac Bridge, and one magical island.
This is Not a Race!
The Zoo-de-Mackinac is a collection of outdoor enthusiasts (2,500-4,000) who want to enjoy a little physical exercise together in one of the most beautiful areas in the state of Michigan. The bike ride starts Saturday morning at Boyne Highlands Resort and spans 51 miles along Lake Michigan on a paved road with very little automobile traffic. Riders pedal through rolling countryside and trillium covered forests, along sandy beaches, and are surrounded by breathtaking views of Lake Michigan from 400′ high bluffs. We stop approximately half way, at a unique place called the Legs Inn for a leisurely lunch and to swap stories. The ride continues on to Mackinaw City, where Star Line Ferry boats have been chartered for the ride over to Mackinac Island. Once on the magical island, check into your hotel and stroll into town to forget the aches and pains from the day’s ride. As the evening wears on, the island comes alive with The Gatehouse, Pink Pony, and Horns hosting post ride parties with incredible live bands!
