(This doesn't have anything to do with photography, but as this is my only social media, I wanted to post something for posterity. This is a really long post about running, and I'd recommend you skip it!) This year I completed 5 races, all at different distances (5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, ultramarathon). It wasn't my original plan to do that, but once I'd done three of them, I figured I might as well complete the whole set. Except the ultramarathon, I'd done all these distances before, so it was more a matter of finding new and interesting races to run.
June 22 - Charlevoix Marathon (26.2 miles) - Official Time 4:20:20 (Warning: I'm going to whinge a bunch about this one) I'd run this race two years ago (my first marathon) with a goal of 4 hours, and finished in 4:30. The crucial mistake I'd made was not eating enough during the race, so I hit the wall at about 18 miles. This year I had a plan for eating during the race, and unfortunately that plan got tossed as the aid stations barely had any food. My first year, they had granola bars and pretzels and other substantial snacks. This year, energy gels and Twizzlers. That's it. I had brought a few bars of my own along, but it proved to not be enough, and I hit the wall at literally the exact same spot as my first year. It was pretty upsetting because I felt completely fine up to that point. My energy level kept dropping over the last 8 miles, to the point where I almost collapsed at mile 24. Somehow I finished 10 minutes faster than my first year, which is the only silver lining. I still plan to beat 4 hours someday. (continued in comments)

Another awesome race on #mackinacisland. It was carey86c and my second run on the island this year. After taking quite a break to nurse a hamstring injury, I was very pleased with the time I was able to put down. Naturally, carey86c finished ahead of me. One more run on the island this year to complete the tri-fecta. We will be back at the end of October for the #greatturtlerun

JUST A REMINDER: While you are waiting for the fall color season to arrive, the late-summer color is spectacular on Mackinac Island. Here’s a late-summer glimpse of the walkway garden at the Hotel Iroquois on the Beach. (Bonus: the weather forecast for this weekend is looking great for a late-summer color tour of Mackinac Island.)

The 2014 Mackinac Island Lilac Festival starts on Friday, June 6, and goes through June 15. Some early lilacs are blooming, but look for the majority to blossom starting next week. In the meantime, here’s a view of some of the early summer flowers adding their color and beauty to June on Mackinac Island.
