The 2014 Mackinac Island Lilac Festival starts on Friday, June 6, and goes through June 15. Some early lilacs are blooming, but look for the majority to blossom starting next week. In the meantime, here’s a view of some of the early summer flowers adding their color and beauty to June on Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island Turtle Trek – A lantern-lit ski and snowshoeing trek through some of Mackinac Island’s natural winter wonderland.
The trail begins at Greany Grove (corner of Arch Rock Road and Huron Road) with a bonfire and hot chocolate. The trail is groomed, track set, lit by lanterns and approximately two miles long.
This is a free event sponsored by Mackinac State Historic Parks, Mackinac Island Community Foundation and the Mackinac Island Ski Club. #thisismackinac

January may be slow for the actual planting of container gardens, but let me tell you, we are so busy planning! We are ordering gorgeous flowers and plants for the upcoming spring planting season and researching new varieties to surprise and delight our clients.

The Hotel Iroquois gardens are such a special place. I found myself walking around Mackinac, feeling sorry for myself because this summer was so tough in Texas and none of my annual beds performed like I wanted them to. But I made myself shake it off: we still have months left in the growing season and I just need to cut my losses and do a refresh! So I guess that’s what I will be doing this weekend. Today is our 31st wedding anniversary. Last year we celebrated our 30th anniversary by doing something we had done on our honeymoon, riding a tandem bike around Mackinac Island. I was not a gardener when we got married, but Stan was already my enabler, making my dreams come true.
chezrea —This is the guy who built and rebuilt my raised beds, our deck, & my bean towers. He also built my potting benches (two!), my hugelkulter berry bed, & the original garden entrance arbor, & he installed several metal arbors. He pulls weeds, mows the lawn, composts, digs holes, & shovels manure, too. But he is not, he insists, a gardener! That's my role, & I'm his wife. That's why he likes to refer to me as "the gardener wife."

08.27.2013. No cars are allowed on Mackinac Island, located on Lake Huron between mainland Michigan and the "Yooper" Peninsula of Michigan. The island is about 8 miles around, and most people get around on bicycle or horse carriage. Men follow behind the carriages, walking with scoopers and bags to pick up after the horses to keep the streets clean.
I happened to arrive on the island the last day of the yearly Grand Garden Show, where many of the homes around the island display their colorfully floral gardens for the people who travel to stay at the famous Grand Hotel where the show is hosted. It was great to see beautiful old homes and their beautifully groomed gardens.

Just got back from the island celebrating 8 years of marriage! We had a great time — full of non-stop wandering I can’t wait to share all our adventures!! Starting with this one….
We, of course, always make a point of biking around the island (8.2 miles)… but this year we made a mistake it was drizzling and cold… about 62 degrees… and so, so windy… but we thought we’d be just fine biking! LOL So we grabbed a cup of coffee from our FAV (luckybean.mi) and headed off on our adventure!
About halfway around the island we were NOT okay and we were too far along to go back, so we kept pressing forward. Safe to say…. We had some STUNNING, unreal views of the beautifully foggy island…. Buuuut we’ll never bike the island against high winds and in the freezing cold rain again lesson learned

DO TELL! Do you have a strong opinion when it comes to food and drinks made in Michigan ? If so, play along on this little game of This or That?
I'll go first! Mackinac Island Fudge, paczki, and Detroit Style Pizza are no-brainers for me. I love them all and would hands down pick each one if forced to choose.
The drink decision is a hard one for me though, as I don't really like either of the choices. Sorry. Growing up, Vernors was the only pop my Grandma had at her house, and she always insisted on pouring me a glass when we visited. However, I was not a fan of ginger ale and it would take me quite long to drink it, which did not get any better the longer it sat and the warmer it got. We always had Faygo in our house growing up, but flavors such as red pop, grape or rock & rye did nothing for me. Today, if a Faygo diet-cola was in the mix, that would be my choice.
Shoutout to puremichigan from whom we "borrowed" this idea who played their game bracket-style in honor of March Madness.
