Hi, I’m Alena, a children’s book illustrator, and I am so excited to share a page from a wonderful project I had the absolute joy of illustrating: "The Island That Tucks You In" written by Talia Oddo! This beautiful book takes young readers on a guided journey through the magical, real-life destination of Mackinac Island, Michigan! It’s a unique place where cars aren't allowed—meaning only horses and bicycles can get you where you need to go. This scene introduces Grady, a sweet spotted horse who lives on the island and know many bedtime stories that he is ready to tell kids to make their sleep restfull and peacefull. For this illustration, I wanted to capture Grady's playful personality as he explores the island landscapes—including a very curious stop by a green asparagus patch! It’s the perfect bike ride for couples, families, or even a group of friends. Rent a bike and take in the beautiful scenery, fresh air, and get a little exercise too! There’s honestly no better way to see the island than pedaling this iconic path. Grab your partner and try the tandem bike, it’s our personal favorite! While crossing Lake Huron on a trip to Mackinac Island last week, I was reminded that direction matters more than speed. A few degrees off course today can become miles tomorrow. Most of us spend our lives watching the clock. How fast am I moving? Am I behind? Am I running out of time? But perhaps the better question is: Am I headed where I truly want to go?
