The shore course yachts are marching up the, well, shore. Looking great. I'm going to jump in my car and head to The Island. I may make a post or two from The Pony, but for now, I'm out. Cheers, all! mbc, sailing director
Good morning. Looks like the Cove Island fleet is almost there. The next few hours will be busy for the finish crew. mbc, sailing director
Comin' in hot for the Shore course. mbc, sailing director
Class D has divided into two groups -- north of the rhumb line, and south. Chico 2, winner of the 2019 Chicago - Mac, has dug back into 2nd at this point. mbc, sailing director
So, the fleet in class C is chasing Spitfire, but right now she's not saving her handicap time (a boat near and dear to me, Courtesan, is actually winning). The last 50 miles of this class is up for grabs.
It's a drag race to the Island for the j120s.
Looks like the Pink Pony (and dare I say Horns) will have a crew tonight!
Short tacking up the Michigan shore, unless you're on Contender -- rolling the dice offshore.
They're lining up, coming in for a landing. Looks like Heartbreaker gets monohull line honors. Could they be overtaken? Equation's pretty fast, not to mention Arctos. mbc, sailing director
Some have asked if the Santa Cruz/Great Lakes 70s are a one-design class. They're actually not. I've sailed on four of them, and they're all a little different -- inside and outside. They're great boats. But this is why Stripes may correct over Equation at the finish. But we'll see. mbc, sailing director
This is interesting. Comfortably Numb, it seems, tacked to get back to her competition, almost like a boat-for-boat dinghy race. By doing so, it looks like she wasn't making any forward progress to the Island. Maybe it was the only way to keep the boat going. She's close to another class winner (for now), Eliminator. Meanwhile, Contender and Pirate are hoping the offshore route pays off. That's great racing! mbc, sailing director
Seems to me that the breeze has gone right, allowing the fleet at the front of the Cove Island section to basically point at Mackinac. They're not close enough to smell the, uh, horses, but they're getting there. Next stop: Last Call! mbc, sailing director
So, the shore course boats sure are sticking to the shore! (One even went inside Middle Island!) There are a couple of boats offshore. Comfortably Numb has opened up her lead. But there's many miles to go. mbc, sailing director
The C&C 35s are generally around Thunder Bay, probably slogging upwind. Keep at it, folks! mbc, sailing director
Wind is out of the north at Thunder Bay on the shore course. Boats are moving again. Some will have to tack to get around the TB light. The boats offshore (Contender, Pirate) seem to be moving nicely. That written, leader Comfortably Numb, well inshore, is chugging along as well. It's a battle! mbc, sailing director
