Especially in the fall! “It was designed by local landscaper Jack Barnwell and commissioned by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission. Created by Gareth Curtiss of Montana, it features a Native American spirit of peace standing between the United States (eagle) and the United Kingdom (lion). ⛴️ From 1911 to 1984 the Chief Wawatam carried loaded railroad cars across the Straits of Mackinac between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, breaking ice through the winters. Three railroads jointly owned the company that ran her. Passenger service ended after the Mackinac Bridge opened in 1957, and freight cars kept crossing until 1984.
